Thailand. This is the Buddhist festival of Loi Kratong, when people send off literally thousands of these lanterns, symbolizing the release of their sins." Incredibly beautiful, terribly heartbreaking." -M. Brooker
The Kingdom of Thailand (formerly Siam)
Quick facts about Thailand Population: About 65.5 million
Ethnic groups: 75% Thai, 14% Chinese, various other groups 11%
Capitol: Bangkok
Religion: 94.6% Buddhist, 4.6% Muslim, 0.7% Christian, 0.1% various other
The three provinces in the south have a Muslim majority. Most of the Buddhists in the country are from the Theravada tradition, a conservative form of the religion.
In the early 1800s, the first Protestant missionaries brought the Gospel message to Thailand. Some 180 years later, less than one percent of Thais know Jesus Christ. However, there are signs of a spiritual awakening on the horizon. More churches have been established in the last 15 years than the prior 165 years combined.
The Gospel is spreading at an accelerating pace.
The opportunities in Thailand are overwhelming for two reasons. First, because Thailand has religious freedom, you can safely share the Gospel throughout the country. Secondly, since 95% of the population is Buddhist, the potential harvest is enormous.
Please pray for the unbelievers in Thailand, and for those who have committed their lives to sharing with them the life-changing Gospel of Jesus!
